FAQ
☑️ What Can I Use TORQUE6 VESC Based ESC for?
VESC Based ESCs are very versatile and powerful ESCs based on the open source ESC project. See more info below. Typically, we use these for smaller electric vehicles such as an electric skateboard or a smaller ebike setup. This ESC specifically has a maximum voltage of 12S which is typically most you will need for an electric skateboard.
☑️ What is a VESC ESC?
VESC stands for Vedder Electronic Speed Controller it’s a open-source electronic speed controller project that can be used for electric skateboards but also e-bikes, electric unicycles and much more. You can visit the full project website by visiting VESC Project website.
A VESC ESC is a the electronic brain for your vehicle which controls motor speed and direction it’s fully functional with a ton of features which allow you to customize everything such as acceleration, throttle curve, regenerative braking, motor timing and much more. The ESC is plugged into your battery pack and a remote is then attached to the ESC to control the ESC/Motors.
☑️ Benefits of a VESC Compatible ESC
VESC based ESC gives you full functionality to configure settings how you like it. It’s extremely versatile and customizable. You will typically need to connect your computer to the VESC based ESC and you can download the VESC software for both Windows and Apple. Once you get it setup there are also bluetooth app options which also work that can be easier.
☑️ Electric Skateboard ESC Upgrade or Replacement?
You can use a VESC based ESC like our TORQUE6 Dual ESC to replace your existing ESC for a DIY which is typically easier since your setup is already DIY. You can potentially use it to replace your existing electric skateboard but there are a few things you have to take into consideration to know if it will fit correctly or not.
- ESC Size - How much room do you have to fit a different ESC?
- Motor Wires - Do you have the same motor wires? If not, you may need to solder an adapter wire to change the connectors so they do fit.
- Sensor Wires - Do you have the same sensor wires? If not, you may need to solder an adapter wire to change the connectors so they do fit.
- Main Battery Power Wires - We use an XT90 to plug in main power to our TORQUE6 Dual ESC. Ideally, you would want a similar connector if not the connector would also have to match. We have more extensive soldering tutorials on our website as well.
- Remote Control - Depending on the existing electric skateboard you are replacing you may need a new electric skateboard remote that is universal and that can be used with VESC. Some electric skateboards have built in ESCs with a specific proprietary remote.
Other then that, those are the main things to consider when looking to replace or upgrade the ESC in your electric skateboard.
☑️ How easy or hard is it to program the VESC?
It’s very simple once you understand what you’re actually doing. We have extensive step by step tutorials on how to program with the VESC based ESCs on our website check VESC Tutorials here.
As long as you have a computer and a USB cable and you have about 10-15 minutes. You can easily program your VESC based ESC. As you’re understanding for the VESC improves you can easily cut this down to 5 minutes or so.
☑️ VESC 4.12 vs VESC 6 Differences?
VESC 4.12 and VESC6 are both popular versions of the VESC based ESCs. They do have key differences which make them different. The general rule is if you’re looking for more of a lower powered board and don’t need the higher performance than the VESC 4.12 are typically great and no need for a higher performance VESC6 based ESC. Below is a general list of the main differences.
VESC 4.12
- Older generation of VESC
- More prone to overheating on aggressive riding. If you are not riding a higher performance build than these are perfectly fine.
VESC6
- Newer generation and more advanced VESC.
- Improved FOC Performance.
- Better heat dissipation.
- More features and customizable options.
VESC6 is better if you are looking for a higher performance ESC, better features and more reliability.
VESC4.12 is a great affordable option and they are definitely better than they were before and these are recommended for lower voltage setups. Their reliability have come along ways and highly recommended.
